The holidays are upon us, bringing twinkling lights, festive gatherings, and the warmth of shared traditions. For many, there’s a certain magic in the air this time of year. However, not everyone feels the same sense of festiveness. For some, the holidays are a time of mixed emotions, stirring up reminders of loss, trauma, or challenges that may feel particularly heavy during this season.
I know this feeling all too well. My mom passed away on Christmas Eve, and more recently, I lost my sister on Boxing Day. These losses have forever changed how I experience this time of year. While the world around me celebrates, I’ve often found myself navigating waves of grief, longing, and loneliness. It’s a bittersweet celebration—one where the joy of the season is intertwined with the sadness of these memories.
The hustle and bustle around us can make it even harder when these feelings arise. It’s easy to feel like everyone else is celebrating while you’re carrying the weight of loss, anxiety, or loneliness. These emotions can create a sense of disconnection just when connection seems to be everywhere. If you find yourself needing someone to talk to this season, please know that help is available. Below, you’ll find a list of resources that can offer support, understanding, and a listening ear when you need it most.
You’re Not Alone
Whatever feelings the holidays may bring, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Reaching out for support is a courageous step and can make a meaningful difference. Whether you lean on a trusted friend, family member, or professional, know that your feelings are valid, and help is always available.
For me, finding ways to honour my mom and sister during the holidays has been a way to blend the pain with the love I still hold for them. Creating space for your emotions and seeking connection when you need it can truly help.
Take good care this season—wishing you self-compassion and peace.
